Charter of the Welsh Language

welsh language law 2
Hywel Williams, the Plaid Cymru MP for the riding of Caernarfon at the United Kingdom Parliament, has set up wikideddfu.com, a “write-your-own-law” website where the people of Wales are encouraged to collaboratively draft a proposal for a Welsh Language Law.

The Welsh Language Act of 1993 was meant to give Welsh some sort of equal status with English but some people feel it did not achieve that goal. Critics of the 1993 law want a stronger worded legislation that would make both Welsh and English official languages in Wales.

The National Post is expected to blame Québec separatists in monday’s editorial.

  1. agf,

now there’s a good example to follow.

“Critics of the 1993 law want a stronger worded legislation that would make both Welsh and English official languages in Wales.”

“equal” – does it not say equal?

on monday – separatists are expected to be clamouring for sspecial language laws in montreal. fines will be levied against signs in privately held businesses that resemble welsh or any other language including gaelic, dutch, chinese, spanish and swahili – but particularly english.

down with the tyranny of collectivists.

  2. You bought that Irish pub stunt?

Jo, I thought you were smarter than that. Just above my piece in Saturday’s Gazette Don McPherson pretty much exposed it for the publicity stunt it was. http://www.canada.com/montrealgazette/news/editorial/story.html?id=2909bb5d-852c-4bd8-9da6-681319b74db7

Signs in gaelic, dutch, chinese, spanish, swahili, welsh and English are still legal in Montreal. Refusing to serve customers in French still isn’t.

    That’s because we’re equal.

Keep calling us commies until you convince yourself.

  3. yes it’s true – it was only a stunt.

the language police (do they wear uniforms or are they just faceless bureaucrats) haven’t got anything better to do than harass taxpayers about their legitimate business.

but it will draw attention to the orwellian nightmare that some are more equal than others.

communism is too narrow – totalitarianism is better and à propos. but don’t let me rain on your parade – you should stop complaining about in your blog and just report these small business offenders to the police. you could show them what equal really means!
